Humane Euthanasia &
Quality of Life
Losing a pet is a deeply emotional experience, and making the decision to euthanize is challenging. Our veterinarians are experienced in managing pain and ensuring the process is humane and compassionate.
You’re welcome to be with your pet during their final moments (except for exotic pets). To ease any pain or anxiety, pets are sedated before the euthanasia solution is given. The final injection acts like an overdose of anesthesia, leading to a peaceful and painless end by first numbing the senses and then gently stopping the heart.
While the decision to euthanize is never easy, it’s important to consider your pet’s suffering and well-being. Euthanasia can be the kindest option if it alleviates their pain and improves their quality of life.
Common reasons for euthanasia:
- Illness that would cause suffering and a poor quality of life
- Inability to afford involved or risky medical procedures
- Organ damage or severe injury/trauma that cannot be repaired
- Behavioral problems that pose a safety risk to humans and cannot be corrected after all options have been exhausted
- Rabies
- Terminal illnesses
What happens after euthanasia?
After performing a euthanasia procedure, you can decide on aftercare options. You may; take your pet home with you for a home burial, have your pet cremated with the ashes returned to you, cremated with no ashes returned or buried on site with other pets at the pet cemetery. Our clinic provides optional but complimentary paw prints and a fur clipping.
When deciding what to do after your pet’s passing, choose what feels right for you. Your decision should be based on what helps you through this time. Grieving is a personal journey that varies for everyone. There’s no set timeframe for mourning, or right or wrong chose on aftercare. If you have questions about the process or want to schedule a quality of life consultation, please contact our office at any time.
